Warning! Pictureless Post

Hola a todos!!!

Big hello from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico!

Quick bites of info on the go!

  • Still no permanent home
  • Still no student visa
  • Still trying to understand Spanish
  • Still no local bank account
On the bright side
  • My limited Spanish coupled with my animate actions often gets the point across
  • Full bank loan amount is in already

Things have been interesting really. For one, we realized that these guys here are not accustomed to speaking to tourists. When I obviously don’t understand what they say, they still say at the same speed and in the exact same phrasing (some argue that speaking slowly wont help, but it helps in this case cos I can understand a little. I probably need to ask them to speak slowly) and don’t bother to animate or act out what they say. (which I do all the time)

We have been meeting new people though. Mainly Asians (South Korea, Hong Kong) though we invited Monica, a Mexican, back to the girls place for dinner. (which was a disaster, more on that later). There’s also no lack of Chinese here actually if you ask me. The Chinese do what they do best when the go overseas… Set up restaurants. We saw a “Comida Chinos” yesterday and lo and behold! There were Chinese behind the counter! We tried to chat them up a bit, but I guess they were busy during lunch time. But, it was a lao bak sai (tear to the eye) moment. BECAUSE… there is RICE! OMG! RICE and Chinese style meat and veg!!! And they serve really heavy lunches. Like really heavy. I will take a picture and show you next time. We also found a bubble tea shop! And oh, is it a surprise that they add chilli to their bubble tea too?

Also we met a Mexican, called Luis Loo, yes, no mistake, Loo who speaks Chinese BETTER than me! His granddad came from the Guangdong province, that’s why. More on him next time.

As I said, we invited Monica back for dinner and it was a disaster.

  1. The shower broke when we got back, i.e. water was running and we were unable to turn it off. Thank goodness that Monica was around and hence she was able to communicate with the landlord about the situation. Such an embarrassment as a host!
  2. My cooking sucks. One of my goals on exchange is to be able to cook… Well let’s just say it was a start…

Alright, I must apologise for the pictureless post. (and the non stop blabbering... trying to squeeze too many days of happening in one post) I guess I was hung up over having a video log, hence I did not take many pictures. Will do so soon…
